After weeks of intense summer heat, Florence finally began to feel more comfortable.
The daytime temperature dropped to around 32°C (90°F), and the early morning temperature fell to about 16°C (61°F). With the cooler air returning, it felt like the perfect opportunity to enjoy a long walk before the summer heat arrived again.
This time, I walked to Bellosguardo, one of my favorite viewpoints in Florence.
One of Florence’s Best Walking Routes
The walk starts outside Florence’s historic center, near La Vecchia Bettola, a traditional Tuscan restaurant famous for its bistecca alla Fiorentina and local cuisine.
From there, the road gradually climbs uphill toward Bellosguardo.
Although this route is less well known than some of Florence’s famous walking paths, it is one of the city’s most enjoyable walks if you’re looking for a longer and quieter route.
Popular Walking and Running Routes in Florence
The most popular walking and running route is undoubtedly along the Arno River.
One of my friends, who often travels to Florence on business, always brings running shoes so he can go for a run along the river.
While walking there, you’ll see all kinds of people enjoying the outdoors—local residents, international students, and business travelers taking advantage of the beautiful scenery.
Another favorite route leads up to Piazzale Michelangelo, one of Florence’s most famous viewpoints.
Bellosguardo is a little different.
Because it lies outside the historic center, there are very few tourists. Instead, it offers a peaceful walk through a quieter part of the city.
Beautiful Views Along the Way
As you walk uphill, you’ll pass a monument dedicated to those who lost their lives in war.
Continuing higher, olive groves begin to appear, and soon you’ll catch beautiful views of Florence, with the magnificent dome of Santa Maria del Fiore rising above the rooftops.
The Bellosguardo viewpoint marks the turning point of the walk.
From there, simply follow the same road back to where you started.
Because Bellosguardo sits on higher ground, a refreshing breeze often makes the walk especially pleasant—even during the summer months.
A Relaxing One-Hour Walk
The entire walk takes about one hour at a comfortable pace.
If you’ve already visited the city’s famous attractions and would like to experience a quieter side of Florence, Bellosguardo is a wonderful place to escape the crowds, enjoy nature, and admire panoramic views of the city.
It’s one of my favorite walking routes, especially on cool summer mornings.
