How to Save Money Traveling in Europe: Exchange Rate Tips, Safe ATMs & Wise Card Guide

Travel Costs Have Changed Dramatically

When I first moved to Florence more than 20 years ago, traveling around Europe was much more affordable.

Today, visitors face a very different situation.

Exchange rates fluctuate constantly, hotel prices have increased significantly, restaurant prices continue to rise, and airfare is often much more expensive than it used to be.

For many travelers, a European vacation is now a much bigger financial commitment.

Yet People Still Choose to Travel

Despite higher costs, friends and guests continue to visit Florence every year.

After the pandemic, many people seem to have changed the way they think about travel.

Instead of saying,

“I’ll go someday.”

more people are saying,

“I’ll go while I can.”

Travel has become less about waiting for the perfect exchange rate and more about making memories while we have the opportunity.

Small Savings Can Make a Big Difference

Although you can’t control exchange rates, there are several ways to reduce unnecessary costs.

For example:

  • Exchange money when rates are favorable.
  • Avoid expensive airport exchange counters.
  • Compare ATM fees before withdrawing cash.
  • Use cards with low foreign transaction fees.

Over the course of a trip, these small savings can add up.

Why Many Travelers Use Wise

Many international travelers now use Wise because it allows them to:

  • Hold multiple currencies.
  • Convert money when exchange rates are favorable.
  • Pay directly with a Wise card.
  • Withdraw cash from ATMs in many countries.

For people visiting Europe, it can often be a more cost-effective option than traditional currency exchange services.

Choosing the Right ATM Matters

Even with a Wise card, choosing a safe ATM is important.

Whenever possible, I recommend using:

  • ATMs located inside banks
  • Post office ATMs
  • ATMs with security cameras

These locations generally feel safer than standalone machines in busy tourist areas.

Use Different Cards for Different Purposes

Wise is excellent for everyday spending, but it’s not necessarily the best option for every purchase.

For expensive purchases such as:

  • Airline tickets
  • Luxury shopping
  • Hotel deposits

many travelers prefer using a credit card that includes purchase protection or travel insurance.

Using the right payment method for each situation is often the smartest approach.

Keep Only What You Need

One simple safety tip is to avoid keeping large amounts of money in your Wise account.

Instead, transfer only what you expect to spend during your trip.

If you need more funds, you can usually top up quickly from your bank account.

Travel While You Can

Living in Florence for over two decades has taught me one important lesson:

There is rarely a perfect time to travel.

Exchange rates rise and fall.

Prices change.

Life changes too.

If visiting Europe is one of your dreams, don’t let exchange rates alone stop you.

Plan carefully, spend wisely, and enjoy the experience while you have the opportunity.
