A Wine Lover’s Journey: From Sommelier Courses to Mindful Sipping
In my thirties, I embarked on a journey into the world of wine. I enrolled in several sommelier courses, immersing myself in the art and science of wine appreciation. Those were heady days, filled with grand tastings where over 1,000 wines awaited discovery. At each event, I would sample between 50 to 60 different wines, honing my palate and expanding my knowledge.
The tastings followed a familiar pattern: about 60% reds, their rich bouquets and complex tannins dominating the experience; 20-30% whites, offering a refreshing counterpoint with their crisp acidity and delicate aromas; and the remainder split between sweet wines and sparkling varieties, adding a touch of decadence and effervescence to the proceedings.
These experiences gifted me with a solid foundation in wine knowledge, though I hesitate to call myself an expert. There’s always more to learn in the vast world of wine!
Nowadays, my approach to wine has evolved. I indulge occasionally – at restaurants, special events, or when preparing a sumptuous dish like bistecca alla fiorentina at home. My commitment to sports and a healthy lifestyle means I’ve scaled back my consumption significantly. I now savor just a couple of glasses once or twice a month, focusing on quality over quantity.
When I do drink, my choice depends on the dish and the occasion. For everyday enjoyment, I opt for wines in the 20-30 euro range. Special events call for more prestigious bottles, typically in the 40-60 euro bracket. I’ve come to believe that beyond the 60 euro mark, you’re often paying more for prestige than taste!
Of course, I’ve had the privilege of tasting some truly legendary wines. The opulent Sassicaia, with its velvety tannins and complex bouquet, stands out in my memory. I’ve also savored the elegance of Ornellaia, the bold character of Tignanello, and the refined power of Solaia. Venturing beyond Italy, I’ve been fortunate to experience the ethereal grace of Château Margaux, the otherworldly complexity of Romanée-Conti, and the robust intensity of Penfolds Grange.
These experiences have shaped my appreciation for wine, teaching me that true enjoyment comes not from price or prestige, but from the perfect pairing of wine, food, and moment. Whether it’s a humble Chianti with a homemade pasta or a prized Brunello for a milestone celebration, each glass is an opportunity to savor life’s rich flavors.
